Non-Invasive Reproductive Hormone Monitoring in the Endangered Pygmy Hog (Porcula salvania)

چکیده
The pygmy hog (Porcula salvania), until recently was classified as a critically endangered suid facing the threat of extinction due to habitat degradation. Efforts are being made protect from and breed them in captivity under Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme (PHCP). However, very little information is available on reproductive physiology hogs. Therefore, present study aims standardize enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) for monitoring pregnancy status using progesterone testosterone metabolites. A total 785 fecal samples were collected five females two males over period one year PHCP Research Breeding Centre, Guwahati, Assam. High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed presence immunoreactive metabolites feces. Mating observed all females, four gave birth successfully. We able detect mean gestation period, based mating parturition, estimated be 153.25 days studied. breeding center recorded 172 births between 1996 2000 found strong seasonal patterns rate, with most occurring May June. In males, significantly higher season than non-breeding season. This first subject will help future programs other captive centers reintroduced populations.

The pygmy hog, Sus salvanius, the smallest and rarest extant suid was first described as the only member of the genus Porcula. It is currently regarded as member of the genus Sus and a sister taxon of the domestic pig/Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa). Phylogenetic analyses of 2316 bp from three mtDNA loci (control-region, cytochrome b, 16S) by Bayesian inference and statistical testing of altern...

The pygmy hog is a rare, small and highly endangered mammal belonging to the Suidae family, and it is presently found only in the Assam state of India. While investigating the cause of death of pygmy hogs housed at a conservation centre for captive breeding and research at Basistha, Assam, it was confirmed that they were susceptible to and died as a result of contracting classical swine fever (...

A practical field extraction method for non-invasive monitoring of hormone activity in the black rhinoceros
Non-invasive hormone analysis is a vital tool in assessing an animal's adrenal and reproductive status, which can be beneficial to in situ and ex situ conservation. However, it can be difficult to employ these techniques when monitoring in situ populations away from controlled laboratory conditions, when electricity is not readily available. A practical method for processing faecal samples in t...
